Abstract

Serial determination of plasma FFA and glucose tolerance test were done on sixteen patients with occlusive cerebrovascular disease and results were obtained as follows;
1. Fasting FFA level was abnormally elevated at the onset and decreased at the end of first week.
2. Higher the level of fasting FFA, more serieus were the patient and prognosis was poor in whom FFA level did not come down in acute stage;
3. TG level were slightly above normal; and ch olesterol were normal at the onset and did not change significantly thereafter.
4. All but one patient tested GTT showed abnormal glucose tolerance.
5. Mechanism of FFA elevation, clinical significance of FFA as risk factor and prognostic implication were discussed
